joão cristino da silva, a trailblazer in the realm of portuguese art, was born in lisbon in 1829. his artistic journey commenced at the academia de bellas artes da universidade de lisboa in 1841, where he laid the groundwork for his future endeavors.turbulent artistic path
noted for his temperamental nature, da silva left the institution in 1847 without completing his courses. this pivotal moment marked the beginning of his eclectic career, which would see him working as an engraver at the arsenal do exército from 1847 to 1849.rise to prominence
da silva's return to painting paved the way for his eventual rise to fame. he began exhibiting in paris, madrid, and portugal, primarily focusing on landscape painting. his collaboration with tomás da anunciação, whom he considered his true mentor, significantly influenced his work.cinco artistas em sintra: a masterpiece
da silva's magnum opus, cinco artistas em sintra (five artists at sintra), showcased at the exposition universelle in 1855, was later acquired by king ferdinand ii. this piece not only solidified his reputation but also underscored his unique approach to romanticism.later life and mental health
