Born in Antwerp, Belgium, Henri Rul was a painter and printmaker who dedicated much of his career to capturing the essence of the landscape. He was also known for his depictions of the dunes and he occasionally worked as a marinist. He was a founding member of the artistic circle Als ik Kan and participated in the first exhibition of the group Les XIII. Notably, he exhibited at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago and received a gold medal at the Bordeaux Exhibition in 1903.
