The Flutist Pintado à mão em óleo, feito especialmente para as suas paredes

Identification of The Flutist by Chen Yifei

The Flutist is an oil on canvas painting created by the artist Chen Yifei. This work, which is also referred to as The flute player or フルート奏者, was produced in 1987. The piece is held within the collection of the Long Museum.

Chen Yifei, a Chinese-American artist, executed this work during a period of his career marked by a focus on subjects such as musicians and melancholic figures. The painting measures 173 x 173 cm. It depicts a formal portrait of a woman engaged in a musical performance, positioned centrally within the frame.

Composition and Visual Elements

The composition is centered on the flutist, who is positioned in the middle of the frame. She sits upon an ornate chair, the design of which adds visual interest to the lower portion of the image. To the right of the subject, a music stand holds sheet music, providing a vertical element that balances the arrangement. In the background, two figures are faintly visible, creating a sense of depth behind the primary subject.

The color palette is dominated by dark tones, specifically blacks and deep greens. These colors establish a somber atmosphere throughout the scene. Light is applied to highlight the texture of the skin and the blonde hair of the woman, creating a contrast against the darker backdrop. The vertical lines of the chair legs and the music stand provide a structured framework for the central figure.

Technique and Artistic Style

The work is executed with a combination of classicism and photorealism. The artist employs a realistic style that aims for accurate representation of the subject and her surroundings. Through the use of oil on canvas, the painting captures the specific nuances of brushstrokes and the subtle color blending characteristic of the medium. These technical applications define the textures of the woman's skin and the sheen of her dress.

Lighting in the composition is soft and diffused. This light illuminates the subject without creating harsh shadows, allowing for a clear view of the flutist and the details of her environment. The technique relies on careful shading to establish depth between the foreground figure, the music stand, and the faint figures in the background. The resulting surface displays a high level of detail in the depiction of the wood grain on the chair and the fabric of the clothing.
