Midsummer Vermont Pintado à mão em óleo, feito especialmente para as suas paredes

A Quietude in Monochrome

The scene unfolds in a stillness that only the high summer sun can cast. A farmhouse sits anchored in the landscape, its silhouette defined by the sharp, deliberate lines of wood engraving. Nearby, a barn rests in the shadow of trees, while the fields are populated by the slow, heavy presence of cows. Two horses move through the pasture, their forms etched into the wove paper with a precision that suggests the weight of the air itself. The composition captures a rural rhythm, a moment where the movement of livestock and the stillness of the architecture merge into a single, quiet breath of the American countryside.

The light does not wash over the scene; it is carved into it. Through the mastery of the wood engraving technique, every texture—the grain of the wood, the softness of the animal coats, the density of the foliage—is rendered through a careful interplay of black and white. There is no color to distract the eye, only the stark, honest truth of the line. The work relies on the depth of the incision to create a sense of atmosphere, turning a simple pastoral view into a study of light and shadow.

The Precision of the Grain

In this 1936 work, the artist utilizes the end grain of the wood to achieve a level of detail that mimics the fine precision of a needle. Each stroke is a physical act of removal, a subtraction that leaves behind a memory of the landscape. The farmhouse and its surrounding structures are not merely shapes; they are textures of lived experience, captured through the meticulous control of the burin. The composition feels grounded, as if the weight of the farmhouse and the animals is held by the very paper they inhabit.

There is a specific, rhythmic quality to the way the cows and horses are placed within the field. They are not frantic; they are part of the earth. The trees in the background rise like dark, textured pillars, framing the domesticity of the farm against the vastness of the Vermont sky. It is a landscape of quiet labor and steady existence, captured in the permanent, unyielding language of the print.

The sun hangs unseen, yet its presence is felt in the clarity of the edges.
