作品の詳細

Man Made is a series of hand-axes which combine rocks sourced from the Negev Desert in southern Israel and plastic handles created with 3D printing. These are objects that experiment with multiple shapes of stone-hand and axes, rather than simple recreations of Stone Age tools. The flint hand-axes were three-dimensionally scanned at the Institute of Archaeology in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the handles were printed in VeroGray with support from Stratasys. Man Made is made by effectively combining two methods with a massive time gap in between-the prehistoric skill of knapping and modern 3D printing-to show what humans can create by adding imagination to their concrete and practical actions.

Currently residing in Israel, he holds a position as Senior Lecturer at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, where he imparts his knowledge and inspires future generations of designers. His career trajectory reflects an unwavering dedication to exploring intersections between art, design, archaeology, and material science—a pursuit that has yielded remarkable results and cemented his reputation as a pioneer in contemporary craft.
  • Early Life & Education: Ganchrow’s formative years were spent honing his artistic sensibilities within the vibrant cultural landscape of Boston. He pursued formal education at Bezalel Academy, earning degrees in Industrial Design, establishing a foundation for his subsequent explorations into innovative design methodologies.
  • Collaborations & ‘Man Made’: Perhaps Ganchrow's most celebrated achievement stems from his collaborative partnership with Ami Drach on the ambitious project 'Man Made'. This groundbreaking endeavor reimagines prehistoric tools through 3D printing technology, demonstrating a masterful ability to reinterpret historical artifacts while simultaneously embracing contemporary fabrication techniques.
  • Exhibitions & Recognition: Ganchrow’s work has garnered international acclaim and been showcased in prestigious venues such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. These exhibitions underscore his commitment to disseminating artistic ideas and engaging audiences with thought-provoking explorations of materiality and form.

He consistently seeks inspiration from ancient crafts—particularly toolmaking—while skillfully integrating digital tools like 3D printing to elevate aesthetic expression and functional utility.

Notable Achievements & Artistic Legacy

Ganchrow’s contributions to the field of industrial design extend beyond individual projects; he has fostered a dialogue between disciplines, demonstrating how artistic concepts can enrich scientific endeavors. His work on ‘Man Made’, in particular, represents a pivotal moment in archaeological visualization and serves as an exemplar of creative problem-solving. Furthermore, his exhibitions have solidified his position as a respected voice within the international art community, prompting critical reflection on the role of technology in preserving cultural heritage and advancing artistic creativity.

Influences & Artistic Style

Ganchrow’s aesthetic sensibilities are profoundly shaped by influences ranging from Bauhaus principles to explorations of Dadaist humor—a testament to his intellectual curiosity and willingness to challenge conventional design paradigms. He champions a distinctive style characterized by meticulous attention to detail, thoughtful material selection, and an understated elegance that prioritizes functionality alongside visual impact. His designs often incorporate unexpected juxtapositions of textures and forms, inviting viewers to contemplate the relationship between past and present—a recurring motif in his oeuvre.
