John Lessore: Capturing Dignity Through Impressionistic Portraits

John Lessore (1939 – ) is a British portrait artist whose distinctive style blends meticulous observation with expressive brushwork, resulting in paintings that resonate with profound emotion and capture the essence of his subjects—primarily Paralympians. Born in London, Lessore’s artistic journey began early, fueled by an innate fascination for capturing human experience through visual mediums. He honed his skills at Chelsea School of Art and subsequently pursued postgraduate studies at Goldsmiths University of London, immersing himself in the techniques of Impressionism and exploring its ability to convey atmosphere and psychological depth.

• Early Influences: Lessore’s formative years were marked by exposure to the works of artists like Turner and Constable, whose landscapes instilled in him a deep appreciation for tonal harmony and capturing fleeting moments of beauty.
• Technique & Style: He developed a signature approach characterized by thick impasto—applying paint thickly onto the canvas—creating textured surfaces that lend physicality to his portraits. This technique allows Lessore to build up layers of color and tone, conveying not only visual appearance but also emotional nuance.

His artistic focus shifted decisively towards portraying individuals with disabilities, recognizing the importance of representing marginalized voices within the art world. Driven by compassion and a commitment to inclusivity, Lessore began collaborating extensively with Paralympians, meticulously documenting their faces and expressions—often capturing moments of quiet contemplation or intense concentration. These portraits aren’t merely representations; they are imbued with respect for resilience and dignity.

• Notable Collaborations: Lessore's most celebrated works include depictions of Helen Lessore (his wife), a Paralympic athlete who embodies grace and determination, and Leon Kossoff, another artist whose collaborative portraits showcase the power of artistic dialogue.
• Recognition & Awards: His dedication to portraying Paralympians has garnered considerable acclaim, earning him numerous awards and commissions from organizations dedicated to promoting disability rights and fostering understanding.

Beyond his portraiture practice, Lessore’s work extends into landscapes and architectural studies, demonstrating a versatility that underscores his broader artistic vision. However, it is his portraits—particularly those celebrating Paralympians—that solidify his legacy as an artist who elevates human experience to the forefront of his creative endeavors. His paintings serve as powerful reminders of beauty found in vulnerability and courage—a testament to Lessore’s enduring contribution to contemporary art history.

• St James' Church, Peckham: One particularly striking piece is “St James Church, Peckham,” a Victorian painting that exemplifies Lessore’s ability to capture the serene atmosphere of a historic setting.

John Lessore continues to inspire artists and audiences alike with his unwavering commitment to portraying individuals with dignity and capturing the profound beauty inherent in human resilience—a legacy firmly rooted in Impressionistic technique and driven by a compassionate artistic spirit.
