A Life Shaped by Found Objects

Born in the central Turkish town of Bor, Cengiz Çekil carried with him a practical creativity inherited from his father, who could transform used materials into toys. This early manual dexterity laid the foundation for an artistic practice that would later reject traditional canvases in favor of the discarded and the everyday. After studying at the Gazi Institute of Education in Ankara, he traveled to Paris on a state scholarship, arriving at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts during a period of profound transformation in the art world. It was in the streets and studios of Paris that he encountered the radical possibilities of conceptual art, finding inspiration in the works of figures like Marcel Duchamp and Joseph Beuys.

His time in France, spanning from 1970 to 1975, allowed him to move beyond conventional materials. He began to experiment with the weight of objects, the heat of elements, and the textures of common supplies. In 1975, he held his first solo exhibition, titled Réorganisation pour une Exposition, staged in the basement of a café in Paris. This early period was marked by an interest in how mass-produced items could be detached from their original contexts to speak of deeper truths.

The Weight of Time and Politics

Upon returning to Turkey, Çekil settled in İzmir, where he spent many years as an academic and a teacher. His work became deeply intertwined with the turbulent political climate of his homeland. During the 1970s, a period marked by intense social polarization and military interventions, his art acted as a quiet but firm record of survival. In 1976, he produced Günce (Diary), a notebook where he stamped the phrase “BUGÜN DE YAŞIYORUM” (Today I am also alive) on each page, a poignant gesture that echoed the precariousness of life during those years.

He often utilized the concept of time as a physical material. In his installations, one frequently encounters wristwatches, wall clocks, and their internal gears. One notable work, What Time Is It?, used screen-printing to repeat this very question across newspaper pages, aligning the text with headlines to reflect on how media shapes political history. He had a unique ability to take low-tech, cheap materials—construction supplies, electrical cables, or even melted candle wax—and imbue them with a sense of gravity and social meaning.

A Legacy of Material Truths

The breadth of his practice was immense, ranging from the sculptural to the performative. He could transform a simple pencil case and linen threads into an exploration of tension in Obsession, or use Coca-Cola bottles and light bulbs to create Towards Childhood, Since Childhood, a piece that referenced both childhood nostalgia and the political symbolism of American imperialism. His later years saw him moving toward Istanbul, where his work gained renewed visibility among a younger generation of artists.

Throughout his career, Çekil remained an analytical thinker who sought universal truths within specific, local struggles. His contributions to the Turkish contemporary art scene were solidified through his participation in major events like the 4th and 11th Istanbul Biennials and exhibitions at institutions such as MoMA in New York. He left behind a body of work that continues to be studied for its ability to find profound human drama within the most mundane fragments of existence.
