A Life of Sacred Art and Resilience
Wilhelm Geyer was a German painter, graphic artist, and stained glass artist. Born in Stuttgart, Germany, he studied at the Kunstakademie Stuttgart from 1919 to 1926, where he was a student of Christian Landenberger. After moving to Ulm in 1927, he became deeply involved in the artistic community, helping to found the Künstlergruppe Stuttgarter Neue Sezession and later co-founding the Oberschwäbische Sezession.
His artistic output was profoundly marked by religious themes, ranging from large altarpieces and graphics to his renowned stained glass windows. He designed glasswork for nearly 200 sacred buildings, including the Cologne Cathedral and Ulm Minster. His commitment to his convictions led to significant personal hardship; due to his connection to the White Rose circle, he was arrested by the Gestapo in 1943, though he was eventually acquitted by a special court.
