A Life of Art and Instruction

Vojtěch Brechler was a Czech painter and illustrator, born in Prague. He was a student of Antonín Mánes and Maximilian Haushofer. Coming from an artistic family, he was the son of the portraitist Václav Brechler and the grandson of the painter Franz Brechler. His talent led him to study at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts within the landscape school.

His career took him across various regions. In 1854, he accepted a position as a drawing professor at a real school in Budapest, where he remained for seven years and painted the local landscapes. He later moved to Gorica, which was part of the Austrian Littoral, to travel along the Adriatic coast and see the monuments of Dalmatia. In 1871, he was granted the title of imperial and royal court painter by Emperor Franz Joseph I. Upon returning to his homeland in 1872, he served as a professor at the Higher German Old Town Gymnasium in Prague.

Artistic Style and Contributions

Brechler was deeply fond of nature, finding a particular interest in painting forest and park scenes. His depictions of trees were executed with perfect realism while maintaining a romantic mystery. His works were exhibited in Prague and abroad, and his paintings were collected by the Krasoumná jednota in Prague, as well as by Emperor Ferdinand V. Some of his canvases even traveled to New York.

As a skilled draftsman, he was a sought-after illustrator for encyclopedic works and illustrated periodicals, including Světozor and Zlatá Praha. His technical mastery was evident in his drawings, which were executed in the spirit of the academicism of his time. His notable works include:
