The Life and Career of Štefan Cpin
Štefan Cpin was born on 11 September 1919 in Olcnava, Slovakia. His life was shaped by the quiet rhythms of his surroundings and a steady engagement with various forms of visual expression. He was a painter, a graphic artist, and an illustrator. Beyond the studio, he spent time working as a teacher.
His hands moved between the broad strokes of painting and the precise lines of graphic work. He spent his years developing a visual language that spanned from the early part of his life through the mid-century. This period saw him navigating the roles of both a creator and an educator. He remained active in his craft until his death on 18 October 1971 in Harmónia.
Notable Works and Artistic Output
The work of Štefan Cpin often reveals itself through the texture of paper and the weight of ink. In 1946, he produced Jar na Spiši, a woodcut on paper. His hand moved between different mediums, shifting from the sharp lines of a woodcut to the softer touch of watercolor. This is seen in Dievča v poli, a watercolor from 1947, and Cestou na trh, another watercolor on paper from 1954. He also worked with oil on cardboard for Dievčatko v šatke.
His output includes various graphic and mixed media experiments. He created the print Torysanka in 1953 and a hand-colored woodcut on paper titled Zahalená in 1957. By 1958, his process involved mixed media on paper for the piece Bažanty. These works show a steady engagement with the physical properties of his materials, whether through the grain of a woodblock or the wash of a brush.
