The Life and Family of Simon Quaglio
The roots of Simon Quaglio trace back to the town of Laino, situated between Lake Como and Lake Lugano. He was born in 1795 in Munich, Germany, into a family defined by the visual arts. His father, Giuseppe Quaglio, was a scene painter who worked across Mannheim, Frankfurt, and Ludwigsburg. This lineage of craftsmanship provided the foundation for Simon Quaglio’s own multifaceted career as a stage designer, lithographer, and painter of landscapes and architectural pictures.
Family influence shaped his professional trajectory. His brother, Angelo Quaglio, moved through the worlds of architecture and painting. While the family name was deeply embedded in the traditions of scene painting, Simon Quaglio expanded the scope of his practice. He operated primarily in Munich, establishing himself within a working dynasty of designers that had been active for generations.
Professional Career and Stage Design Innovations
Munich serves as the primary stage for Quaglio's professional life. He moves through the theatrical landscape of Germany, leaving behind a legacy of over 100 productions. His influence extends beyond the stage into the realm of lithography and the creation of landscape and architectural pictures, notably contributing to Sulpiz Boisserée's documentation of Cologne Cathedral.
A fundamental shift occurs in the way space is perceived on the German stage. For generations, theater relied on flat, painted backdrops to suggest depth. Quaglio breaks this tradition. He is among the first designers to move away from these two-dimensional flats, introducing built scenery instead. This transition toward genuinely three-dimensional, constructed environments changes how light and space function within a production. The stage ceases to be a mere surface for painting and becomes a physical, volumetric space.
