Early Life, Family and Training

Sergius Pauser enters the scene in Vienna, Austria-Hungary, on 28 December 1896. His early years are defined by the rigid lines of structural design, as he begins his formal education by studying architecture in Vienna. This foundation in spatial logic provides a disciplined starting point before his focus shifts entirely toward the canvas.

The trajectory changes in 1919. Pauser moves to Munich to enter the Academy of Fine Arts, where he remains until 1924. The atmosphere of the academy exposes him to the heavy, psychological weight of the era's leading figures. He studies the works of Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, and Karl Hofer, absorbing their approaches to form and subject matter.

The training continues back in his home city. From 1925 to 1926, Pauser returns to the Academy in Vienna. He studies under Karl Sterrer, refining his technical capabilities within the academic tradition. By the end of this period, the architect has been fully replaced by the painter.

Artistic Style and International Recognition

Pauser develops a realist-expressive style, a visual language shaped by the heavy influence of Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, and Karl Hofer. His brushwork moves away from mere representation toward a more forceful, emotive execution. By 1927, his presence in the Viennese art scene is solidified through his membership in the Secession. This period marks a rapid ascent; he secures the Austrian State Prize in 1932, signaling his growing importance within his home country.

The scale of his recognition expands beyond Austrian borders. In 1935, he receives the international Carnegie exhibition price in Pittsburgh, an achievement that places his work on a global stage. His canvases also find a place in the high-stakes arena of international competition, as his works are selected for the art competitions at both the 1928 and 1936 Summer Olympics. These selections confirm his status as a significant figure in the interwar period, a time when his reputation reaches its peak before the political shifts of the late 1930s intervene.

Persecution and Later Career

The momentum of Pauser's international career hits a violent wall following the Nazi occupation of Austria. His depictions of the grim realities of working conditions clash with official propaganda, leading to a direct confrontation with the regime. In 1939, Adolf Hitler personally removes three of Pauser's paintings from an exhibition at the Haus der Deutschen Kunst in Munich. The works are officially branded as degenerate art. The consequences are swift and absolute: Pauser is labeled politically unreliable, denied professional promotions, and banned from exhibiting his work entirely. This period of suppression eventually leads him to a concentration camp.

After the liberation of Austria, the landscape of his life shifts toward rehabilitation. He returns to the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he is reinstalled as a teacher. His influence within the institution grows steadily over the following decades. He spends twenty years teaching at the Academy, eventually being named a Professor in 1947. During this later period, he becomes a sought-after portraitist, capturing the likenesses of numerous actors and politicians. He remains a central figure in the Austrian art scene until his death in 1970.
