Philip Hogben’s artistic foundation was built through rigorous study at the Derby and Winchester Schools of Art between 1961 and 1966. These early years provided the technical discipline required for a career defined by both landscape and figure painting. In 1969, a significant change in geography occurred when he moved to Cornwall. This relocation was not merely a change of scenery but a professional transition, as he began teaching at the Falmouth School of Art, a position he held for many years.

His presence in the Cornish art scene was marked by long-term involvement with various professional bodies. He became a steady member of the Newlyn Art Society and contributed to the administrative life of the art community, serving on the Council of the Newlyn Art Association during its centennial year in 1995.

Technical Versatility and Subject Matter

Hogben’s practice is characterized by a breadth of medium and a keen eye for the structural essence of his subjects.
