A Life Shaped by Travel and Tradition

Paul Milliet lived a life that moved between the quiet studios of Paris and the sun-drenched landscapes of Italy. Born in 1844, his early years were marked by the movement of his family; his father, Félix, was a singer who moved to Geneva in 1851. This early exposure to different borders likely prepared him for the wandering path his career would eventually take. He began his formal training as a student at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris, but his foundations were also laid in Geneva under the guidance of Jean-Léonard Lugardon.

In 1863, he established himself in France, where he worked alongside Charles Gleyre. This period of collaboration helped refine his approach to history painting and decoration. His interests extended far beyond the canvas, as he was also a traveler and a collector of photographs. These two passions often intersected during his time abroad.

The Italian Influence

Italy held a profound place in Milliet's development. He arrived in Florence in August 1866, beginning a series of stays that would deeply inform his visual language. Between 1866 and 1869, and again from 1872 to 1879, he moved through the heart of the Italian peninsula. He visited cities such as Padua, Milan, Orvieto, and Rome, seeking out the works of the great masters.

His time in Italy was not merely about sightseeing but about a rigorous study of art history. He looked to the frescoes of Giotto in Padua and the works of Luini in Milan. He even preferred to study these ancient works with a pencil in hand, capturing the essence of the masters through direct observation. This period of wandering allowed him to build an iconographic collection of photographic reproductions, which served as a personal archive of the beauty he encountered.

Artistic Pursuits and Legacy

Milliet's work spanned several disciplines, including history painting and decorative arts. He was capable of large-scale projects, such as the ceiling for the grand foyer of the new Théâtre de Genève in 1879, which featured an allegory of opera. His smaller works often focused on classical themes, such as his studies of Echo and Narcissus or his sketches regarding virtues and vices.

His contributions to the art world were marked by a dedication to both the creation of new images and the preservation of old ones. At the end of his life, he left a significant gesture to the city of Geneva, providing funds to acquire plaster casts of famous statues for a future museum of sculpture. His death in 1918 marked the end of a life spent observing the intersection of classical tradition and the modernizing world.
