A Life in Delft and Beyond
Born in Delft in 1860, Leonardus Johannes Senf, known to many as Leon, lived a life that moved through the coastal and quiet landscapes of the Netherlands. His path took him from the streets of Delft to Voorburg, where he resided between 1903 and 1918. Later years saw him finding a home in Noordwijk, a place he returned to several times, as well as in Schoorl. By the time of his death in Alkmaar in 1940, he had established himself as a man deeply connected to the visual arts, not only through his own hand but through his role as a teacher to others.
His presence in the art community was marked by his membership in the Haagse Kunstkring. He was a man who shared his knowledge, guiding students such as L.C. ten Bosch, J.Jansen, and H.L. Nieser. His work was not limited to a single medium; he was a painter, an etcher, and a ceramist, showing a versatility that allowed him to capture the world through various lenses.
The Quiet Observation of Nature
Senf had a way of looking at the world that felt both intimate and grounded. He often found himself drawn to the natural surroundings of the Gelderse village of Elspeet. There, he spent time making drawings of the local landscape, capturing the essence of the countryside. His sketches were not merely observations but were deeply rooted in the specific character of the places he visited.
His subject matter often focused on the people who lived in harmony with the land. One notable work, a chalk drawing of the shepherd Willem Mouw, shows his interest in the human figures of the rural landscape. These works, created between 1920 and 1940, reflect a period of his life spent observing the quiet, steady rhythms of life in the Dutch countryside.
Technique and Legacy
The textures of Senf's work varied depending on the tools he held. He was skilled in the use of chalk, mixed media, and etching, allowing him to experiment with how light and shadow defined a scene. His ability to move between the delicate precision of a drawing and the more substantial presence of ceramics speaks to a disciplined approach to his craft.
His contributions to the local culture are preserved in several collections, including those at the Museum Prinsenhof Delft, the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, and the Museum Noordwijk. Through these archives, his vision of the Dutch landscape and its people remains accessible, preserved in the very places he once called home.
