1823 - 1896

Early Life, Family and Training

Born on September 7, 1823, in Szczecin, Poland, Julius Grün grew up in a household defined by the precise work of a master tailor. This early environment provided a foundation for a life spent observing form and detail. His path toward painting began through a scholarship provided by the merchant community of Stettin, which allowed him to move toward formal study.

He sought his training at the Berlin Academy of Arts, where he focused on the fundamentals of the craft. His time in the academy was marked by a specific recognition in 1842, when he received a prize for his work in the life drawing class. This period of study was spent under the guidance of Carl Joseph Begas, working as a student in his studio to refine his technique in portraiture, genre, and history painting.

Travels and Artistic Career

His brush moved through the studios of Antwerp and Paris during 1854 and 1855. These years abroad shaped the way he approached the canvas, moving beyond the initial training he received in Berlin. Later, in 1875, he traveled to Italy, a period that added further depth to his technical skill. He was a man of the Berlin art scene, holding membership in the Verein Berliner Künstler and maintaining a steady presence in the city's professional circles.

His work appeared frequently in the Berlin Academy exhibitions, a regular occurrence between 1856 and 1892. He was also part of the Great Berlin Art Exhibition from 1893 to 1897. While he is often remembered for his portraits, he also turned his attention to other subjects, including history and genre scenes. One such work was a depiction of Napoleon during the fire of Moscow.

Patrons and Notable Commissions

Grün held a central place among the leading artists of the Berlin School. His brush was often called upon by the upper echelons of Prussian society, capturing the likenesses of those who held significant influence. He painted King Wilhelm I and the Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm, meeting the requirements of the Prussian court. His work moved through the drawing rooms of generals like Eduard von Raven and Konstantin Bernhard von Voigts-Rhetz, as well as the homes of figures like the chemist Wilhelm von Hofmann and the composer Carl Loewe.

Much of his reputation rests on the faces of the industrial elite. He spent time with the industrialist Alfred Krupp, producing portraits that became well-known. These commissions extended to the family, including Bertha Krupp, née Eichhoff. Through these sitters, his presence was felt in the private spaces of the era's most powerful families. He also turned his attention to history and genre scenes, such as his depiction of Napoleon during the fire in Moscow.
