The Life and Legacy of Jan de Vos II
Born in Leiden, Netherlands, Jan de Vos II was a prominent figure within the artistic community of his city. He began his professional journey as a kladschilder, joining the Sint Lucasgilde in 1648 alongside his father. Over time, his career evolved from that of a kladschilder to a recognized kunstschilder. His leadership within the guild was notable; he served as a headman and later as the deken van de grote quast. Throughout his life, he utilized various signatures, including Johannes de Vos de Jonghe and Johannes de Vos van Vossenburgh, and frequently employed an image of a small fox as his signature.
Beyond his artistic pursuits, Jan de Vos II was a man of significant means. His wealth was evidenced by his ownership of nineteen houses, a family burial site, and a pleasure garden located outside the Zijlpoort. His personal life was marked by two marriages, first to Aeltgen Adams Treurniet and later to Trijntje Cors van der Mij.
Artistic Works and Historical Context
Jan de Vos II is recognized for his contributions to landscape painting. His repertoire includes works such as the Extensive View of Rhenen. Historical records indicate that some landscapes, such as a dune landscape and a view of Cologne, were occasionally misattributed to his father, though they are associated with his name. His body of work is part of the rich artistic heritage of the Dutch Golden Age, reflecting the professional evolution of a painter transitioning from foundational drafting to fine art.
