The Life and Career of Hieronimo Miani
Hieronimo Miani, also known as Hieronymus Miani, was an Italian history painter. He began his life in Venice, Italy, where he was born in 1700. His early career took him away from the canals of his birthplace and into the service of Karl Philip Emanuel of Pfalz in Mannheim, Germany. This period of work in Germany established his presence as a painter capable of handling the demands of a formal court.
In 1739, his path led him north to Denmark. He was called to the Danish court to serve King Christian VI. This move marked a significant shift in his professional life, as he transitioned from the service of a German prince to the service of a Danish monarch. His presence in Denmark would eventually extend beyond the walls of the palace, as he became a figure of influence within the local artistic community through his teaching.
Royal Commissions and Academy Leadership
Miani’s presence in Denmark was defined by his service to the royal court of King Christian VI. His hands were busy with the decoration of Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen between 1739 and 1740. During this time, he worked on a large plafond, a ceiling decoration intended to occupy the space above the viewer. This religious work was titled "Uretfærdighedens og lasternes flugt for den retfærdige Guds åsyn" ("The Flight of Injustice and Vices at the Sight of the Just God").
Beyond the palace walls, Miani helped shape the formal training of artists in the region. In 1740, he and the French sculptor Louis August le Clerc took over the leadership of the newly formed Christian VI’s Art Academy, known as The Drawing and Painting Academy. The school opened its doors to many people, including art lovers and various handworkers who sought to improve their drawing skills. Miani and le Clerc were both named professors at the institution.
Notable Works and Their Locations
Much of Miani's output remains tied to the history of the Danish court, some of it preserved and some of it lost to fire. In the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen, one finds An Allegory, an oil painting on canvas. This work is part of a larger religious theme titled "Uretfærdighedens og lasternes flugt for den retfærdige Guds åsyn" (The Flight of Injustice and Vices at the Sight of the Just God), which Miani painted for the decoration of Christiansborg Palace between 1739 and 1740. An oil painting of this same theme is held within the collection of the Danish National Gallery.
The physical record of his time in Denmark is incomplete. Two large figure paintings depicting scenes from the story of Moses were destroyed during the Christiansborg fire of 1794. While those canvases are gone, a trace of his portraiture remains through an engraving based on a painting of Crown Prince Frederik V on horseback. This engraving survives even though the original portrait was lost in the same fire.
