Early Life, Family and Training
Hans Oertle was born on May 20, 1897, in Nuremberg, Germany. His early years in this German city provided the foundation for a life spent working with color and form. He sought formal instruction to refine his natural inclinations, beginning his studies under Rudolf Schiestl at the Kunstnijverheidsschool in Nuremberg. This early training helped shape his technical understanding before he moved on to more advanced academic settings.
To further his development, Oertle traveled to Munich, where he studied under Adolf Hengeler at the Akademie voor Beeldende Kunsten. This period of study allowed him to expand his perspective and technical skill under the guidance of established instructors. His time in Munich was a significant chapter in his formation, bridging the gap between his initial schooling and his professional life.
In his personal life, Hans Oertle shared his life with his wife, Frieda. Their connection remained a constant through his various professional shifts and the changes brought about by the decades. After his death in 1975, Frieda sought a different kind of peace, entering a local convent. She remained there until her own passing, eventually leaving his collection of paintings to be shared with others.
Career with Philips and Advertising
In 1922, Hans Oertle entered a new chapter when he was hired by Dr. Halbertsma to work for Philips. He held a significant position as the first professional advertising designer for the company. During his time in Eindhoven, he lived in Philipsdorp, a residential area specifically built for the workers of the firm. His presence in the company was marked by a variety of commercial design tasks that required both technical precision and an eye for layout.
His creative output during these years was diverse. He was responsible for designing the packaging for car lamps and radio tubes, ensuring that even functional industrial items had a distinct visual identity. He also worked as an illustrator for the booklet Een kijkje in de Gloeilampenfabricage, where his drawings captured the specific details of the glass factory, such as the hand-made clay crucibles used to melt glass. His posters were also a notable part of his professional life, including a design for the Argentalamp that was brought to market in early 1922.
Oertle’s tenure with the company lasted until September 1924. After leaving Philips, he returned to Germany, having spent his years in the Netherlands contributing to the visual language of one of the era's major industrial names.
