Life and Artistic Journey
Born in Düsseldorf, Germany, Hans Dornbach initially pursued a law degree after attending various gymnasiums in Berlin, Koblenz, Boppard, and Bonn. He eventually abandoned his studies to dedicate himself to painting, receiving artistic training in Weimar under Ludwig von Hofmann. His education continued in Paris, where he attended the Malschule Rancon. Following his service as a soldier during the First World War, he settled in Caputh before moving to Koblenz to live with his mother. There, he worked in an atelier built as an extension to the Luisenturm, a tower his family had acquired in 1911. Dornbach was active in the artistic community, co-founding the Künstlervereinigung „Das Boot” in 1919 and later serving as president of the Landesberufsverband bildender Künstler Rheinland-Pfalz.
Artistic Style and Legacy
Dornbach's work is associated with or close to German and Rhenish Expressionism, with Cubism serving as a determining influence on his painting. His frequent travels to France and Italy contributed to a sense of Mediterranean life in his imagery, alongside motifs from his home in Koblenz. His oeuvre faced significant hardship during the Second World War; a 1944 air raid destroyed his tower and atelier, resulting in the loss of 170 paintings, sketches, and drafts. Among his works was the expressive still life Blumenstilleben mit Spielzeug, which was seized and destroyed during the Nazi "Entartete Kunst" action. He died in Lippstadt.
