Early Life, Family and Training

Gottfried Hofer was born on 27 March 1858 in Bolzano. He grew up in a household defined by practical, hardworking trades. His father, Alois Hofer, worked as a confectioner and a miller, while his mother, Therese Ribeser, served the community as a midwife. This upbringing in Bolzano provided the foundation for a life that would eventually lead him far from his birthplace.

The pull toward art became a reality in 1876 when he moved to study painting. He enrolled at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, a significant step for a young man from Bolzano. During his time in Munich, he entered the studio of Ludwig von Löfftz, a master who would guide his early technical development and help shape his approach to the canvas.

Life and Activity in Rome

After his studies, Hofer felt the pull of the south, traveling through France and into Italy. He eventually settled in Rome, where he would remain for fifteen years, from 1895 to 1910. During this long stay, he became part of the community of Deutschrömer, a group of German-speaking artists living and working in the city. This period allowed him to immerse himself in the light and atmosphere of the Italian landscape.

He established his studio in the Villa Strohl-Fern, a place that provided him with a steady base for his creative work. His time in Rome was marked by a life of movement between the city and other locations, yet the villa remained a central part of his professional existence. He lived through a period of significant change in the art world while finding his own place among the expatriate circles in Rome.

Commissions and Notable Works

Hofer’s brush often met the faces of the people who shaped his era. In 1893, he captured the likeness of the German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, a task that expanded into a larger scene titled Una cena con Bismarck e l'aristocrazia di Amburgo. His ability to handle significant figures was matched by his interest in more personal subjects. He painted I miei genitori in 1885, a work that looked back toward his roots in Bolzano. He also rendered a portrait of Otto Gildemeister, showing a steady hand when faced with the prominent individuals of his time.

His work was not confined to the private studio or the portraitist's easel. He left a lasting mark on the public architecture of his homeland through a large ceiling fresco in the council chamber of the new Bolzano Town Hall. This project required a sense of scale and permanence that differed from his more intimate studies. He also explored the natural world and the quiet moments of life, such as in La difesa della preda in 1908 and Mädchen auf einer Blumenwiese, which was painted about 1911.

Later Years and Death

As the years passed, Hofer’s life became a series of movements between the bustling urban centers of Europe and the quietude of the mountains. He lived in many places, including Munich, Paris, Hamburg, Rome, and Berlin. Despite the constant change of scenery, he always found his way back to the landscapes that shaped him. He spent his summers in Madonna di Campiglio and Sils im Engadin/Segl, seeking the air and light of the high altitudes.

His connection to the mountains was deeply personal. In Madonna di Campiglio, he built a capanna Hofer on Monte Spinale, a small cabin that served as his atelier. This refuge allowed him to remain close to the natural world he so often painted. Even as he settled in Berlin after 1910, the pull of the mountains remained a constant in his life.

When he died in Berlin in 1932, his final resting place was far from the city streets. He was buried in Sils. Today, his ashes rest in Fex, Switzerland, a quiet end for a man who spent so much of his life wandering between the great cities and the high peaks.
