Early Life and Artistic Training
Born in Itapetininga, Brazil, Campos Ayres began his creative life far from the formal academies of Europe. He first developed his skills as a self-taught painter in Avaré, working through the fundamental challenges of the craft without the guidance of a master. This early period of solitary practice established the foundation for a career that would eventually span continents, moving from the Brazilian interior to the established art centers of the Old World.
His talent eventually caught the attention of the Pensionato Artístico do Estado de São Paulo, which granted him a scholarship in 1909. This opportunity allowed him to travel to Paris, where his technical abilities were refined within the rigorous traditions of the Académie Julian. In the studios of Paris, he moved beyond the instincts of a self-taught draftsman to study under established figures such as Tony Robert-Fleury, Paul Albert Laurens, and Henri Paul Royer.
This period of formal instruction transformed his approach to the canvas. While his training focused on the disciplined study of figures, the influence of his instructors helped shape his development as a painter, draftsman, and teacher. The transition from the rural landscapes of his youth to the structured academic environment of France provided the technical vocabulary that would define his professional output.
Artistic Activity in Paris and Brazil
The years spent in Paris provided a rigorous foundation for his development. Under the guidance of Henri Roeyer, Robert Fleury, and Jean-Paul Laurens, he refined his technical command within the academic tradition. His education extended beyond the classroom; he sought out the Musée du Louvre to study the 19th-century French landscape painters, absorbing their approach to light and composition. These excursions into the surrounding countryside allowed him to translate his observations into sketches and studies of the natural world.
Upon returning to Brazil in 1914, he brought this European training to the local scene. His presence in the art world was marked by several significant exhibitions in São Paulo. He held a solo exhibition in May 1914 at the Casa Mascarani, followed by a showing at the Casa Verde in June 1917. By 1919, his work was being presented at the Casa di Franco, where his ability to capture regional life began to garner notable attention from the local intelligentsia.
Key Works and Techniques
The artist’s technical approach varied according to the medium and the subject at hand, often utilizing oil on wood for intimate compositions such as the work titled Paisagem. His ability to capture specific locales was evident in his early output, including Retrato da Baronesa de Sabará, Vista de Atibaia, 1829, and Vista de São Vicente, 1870, all of which date from about 1901. These works demonstrate a focus on the visual details of the Brazilian landscape and its inhabitants during a formative period of his career.
Beyond larger canvases, he frequently worked on smaller scales using oil on cardboard. This method is seen in Primavera em flor and Paisagem com rio, where the material allowed for a more direct application of paint. His interest in the natural world extended to undated landscapes that sought to translate the quietude of the countryside into a permanent visual record. Through these varied surfaces, he maintained a consistent interest in the regional traditions and the life found outside of major urban centers.
