A Life Between Sea and Canvas
August von Ramberg was an Austrian naval officer and painter. Born in Veselí nad Moravou, Czech Republic, he began his career as a naval cadet, serving on the corvette Donau during voyages to Latin America and North America. His naval career included roles as a torpedo boat commander and navigation officer, and he accompanied Archduke Franz Ferdinand on a world voyage aboard the cruiser Kaiserin Elisabeth.
Following a period of medical leave starting in 1904, he dedicated himself to marine painting, a skill he taught himself. During the First World War, he was reactivated as a "naval painter." His work often captured immediate events, though he also painted from memory and photographs after the war. While primarily known as a marine painter, his repertoire also included landscapes and still lifes. He was proficient in both oil painting and watercolor.
