Born in Ystalyfera, within the Swansea Valley of South Wales, Evans’ early years were defined by the grit and toil of the coal mines. From the tender age of thirteen, he worked as a collier, an experience that would later become the very heartbeat of his creative output. His journey from the pits to the palette began in 1911 through part-time classes at the Swansea School of Art. After a decade of working underground, Evans pursued his studies more deeply, eventually winning a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London. His oeuvre is characterized by a powerful depiction of the human condition, particularly through his focus on the coal miners of South Wales.
