Deconstructing Form: Rogelio José Polesello’s “Writings from Memory”

• A Bold Statement in Geometric Abstraction: “Writings from Memory,” created in 2003, is a powerful example of Rogelio José Polesello's pioneering introduction of Op Art to Latin America. This large-scale (200 x 200 cm) artwork eschews traditional representation, instead presenting a dynamic field of fragmented geometric forms rendered in stark black and white. The composition feels both chaotic and meticulously constructed – an energetic interplay between order and disruption.
• Visual Language & Technique: Polesello masterfully employs sharp angles, overlapping planes, and contrasting values to create a sense of visual vibration. These shapes—suggestive of stylized letters or musical notation—are not merely decorative; they function as building blocks for a complex visual language. The thick application of paint, evident in the textured surface, adds physicality and depth to what is otherwise a flat, two-dimensional space. This technique emphasizes the materiality of the work while simultaneously contributing to its unsettling energy.

The Legacy of Op Art & Polesello’s Unique Voice

• Polesello and the Optical Illusion: Rogelio José Polesello (1939-2014) was a key figure in bringing Op Art—a style focused on creating optical illusions through geometric abstraction—to Argentina. While influenced by international movements, he infused his work with a distinctly Latin American sensibility. “Writings from Memory” demonstrates this perfectly; it’s not simply an exercise in visual trickery but a deeply expressive exploration of form and perception.
• From Graphic Design to Fine Art: Polesello's background in graphic and commercial design profoundly shaped his artistic approach. This is visible in the clarity of line, the boldness of contrast, and the overall sense of deliberate construction within “Writings from Memory.” He translated the principles of visual communication into a fine art context, creating works that are both intellectually stimulating and visually arresting.

Interpreting Fragmentation & Emotional Resonance

• Symbolism and Narrative: The title “Writings from Memory” is particularly evocative. The fragmented forms can be interpreted as remnants of thoughts, experiences, or perhaps even lost languages. The artwork suggests a deconstruction of narrative—a breaking down of communication into its most basic elements. This sense of fragmentation may resonate with themes of memory, loss, and the challenges of conveying meaning in a complex world.
• A Dynamic Presence: Despite its monochromatic palette, “Writings from Memory” is far from cold or sterile. The dynamic composition and energetic brushwork create a sense of movement and tension. This artwork would serve as a striking focal point in any contemporary interior, adding a layer of intellectual depth and visual excitement to the space.
