In the last few years I have made a series of small collages reusing some subjects coming from the Anthology of the positions (203 meters performable book). Most of these small-sized collages use parts or portions of body images that fit together and intertwine with each other, creating three-dimensional vacuum spaces. These voids was a starting point in order to experiment with a large collage using the volume as a practical and participated place. The Cosmos Space evokes the interior of the volume of a Greek tympanum, collecting the behind the scenes of a hypothetical staging, a container of disused bodies, stored, deposited between order and disorder, will and chance. The shapes remain suspended in space, in continuous movement.

The Poetics of Presence: The Art of Marta dell’Angelo

Born in Pavia, Italy, in 1970, Marta dell’Angelo has dedicated her creative life to a profound investigation of the human form. For dell’Angelo, the body is far more than a mere anatomical subject; it is a dynamic vessel of expression, shaped by the subtle nuances of posture and the silent language of gesture. Her artistic journey began within the prestigious halls of the Brera Academy, where she refined her technical mastery and developed a unique visual vocabulary. This rigorous training provided the foundation for a career that would eventually transcend traditional boundaries, earning her international acclaim, most notably through the prestigious New York Award in 2002.

The essence of dell’Angelo's work lies in her ability to translate physical movement into lasting visual poetry. Her practice is remarkably multidisciplinary, weaving together the tactile nature of painting, the temporal dimension of video installation, and the precise observation of photography. In her paintings, one finds figures caught in moments of quiet significance—a seated figure, a reaching hand, or a walking stride. While these actions may appear simple, they are rendered with such meticulous detail that the viewer becomes acutely aware of the shifting musculature and the delicate balance of weight, revealing the deep psychological states hidden within physical presence.

A Symphony of Movement and Space

Dell’Angelo’s aesthetic is deeply informed by a sophisticated interplay between order and disorder. Her work often draws inspiration from the understated elegance of Surrealist masters such as Giorgio Morandi and Yves Klein, utilizing muted palettes and geometric compositions to create an atmosphere of contemplative stillness. This mastery of color allows her to evoke atmospheric effects that heighten the emotional resonance of her subjects, turning a simple study of posture into a profound meditation on existence.

In recent years, her exploration of form has expanded into the intricate realm of collage and three-dimensional space. Through works such as Collage Vivant, she has experimented with the concept of "voids," using portions of body images that intertwine to create perceived vacuum spaces. This technique allows her to explore:

  • The Cosmos Space: A conceptual environment evoking the interior of a Greek tympanum, where the "behind the scenes" of a hypothetical staging is revealed.
  • Spatial Volume: The use of collage to transform flat imagery into a practical, participated place that invites the viewer into a sculptural experience.
  • The Tension of Motion: Creating shapes that remain suspended in space, caught in a state of continuous, breathless movement.

Legacy and Artistic Vision

The significance of Marta dell’Angelo’s contribution to contemporary art lies in her ability to bridge the gap between the physical and the metaphysical. By focusing on the "Anthology of positions," she treats the human body as a performable book, where every movement is a word and every posture a sentence. Her photographic explorations complement this by capturing fleeting moments of interaction with remarkable clarity, often presented alongside video projections to create immersive environments that challenge our perception of body and space.

As her career continues to evolve, dell’Angelo remains a vital voice in the exploration of human identity. Her work serves as a reminder that within the simplest gesture lies an infinite complexity, and within the stillness of a captured moment, there exists a profound, eternal movement. Through her dedication to observing the subtle shifts of life, she has created a body of work that is both intellectually stimulating and deeply moving, securing her place in the lineage of artists who find the universal within the individual.
