Born Carl Raymond Johnson in Chariton, Iowa, in 1891, the artist would eventually shed his more formal moniker to embrace a name that felt more grounded in tradition, yet his work would soar far beyond the boundaries of literal representation. His journey was one of constant metamorphosis, moving from the meticulous observation of nature toward a bold, transcendental abstraction that sought to capture the very essence of the unseen.
Jonson’s artistic foundation was laid in the Pacific Northwest, where his studies at the Pacific Northwest College of Art under Arthur Wesley Dow instilled in him a lifelong reverence for composition. From Dow, Jonson learned the delicate art of notan—the Japanese principle of tonal balance—which taught him how to harmonize light and dark to create a sense of structural equilibrium. This early training provided the technical scaffolding upon which he would later build much more complex, spiritual architectures.
