Andrew Esiebo: Capturing the Soul of Nigeria

Andrew Esiebo’s artistic journey began in Lagos, Nigeria, where he was born in 1978—a city pulsating with vibrant culture and grappling with rapid urbanization. From a young age, fueled by a gift from his friend Jose Maria – a camera – Esiebo embarked on a self-taught exploration of photography, documenting the transformative changes unfolding across Nigeria’s landscape. This formative experience instilled in him an unwavering dedication to portraying authentic narratives and fostering genuine connections within his subjects' worlds. Early influences included collaborations with Paul Udstrand, who nurtured Esiebo’s burgeoning talent by introducing him to seminal photographic works and establishing crucial artistic dialogues. Furthermore, assisting his uncle, Esiebo Joseph, in mastering the craft of black and white printing honed his technical skills and deepened his understanding of visual storytelling—a foundation that would underpin his subsequent endeavors.
