A Life of Pseudonyms and Shadows

Lübeck, 1865. The daughter of a pharmacist, Marie Dorette Caroline Schorer grows up in a house where intellectuals and artists gather. Her path diverges from the social expectations of a young woman in Germany when, at seventeen, she leaves her family home for Berlin. This move sparks scandal in her hometown, but it sets the stage for a transformation. In the studios of Berlin, she adopts a new identity: Maria Slavona.

The name is a shield and a tool, shared with the Danish painter Vilhelm Petersen. Together, they navigate the art scenes of Europe, seeking a way to exist outside the rigid structures of the Prussian Academy. By 1890, the scene shifts to Paris. The city offers a new world, though the reality of its formal schools brings disappointment. Instead, Slavona finds her rhythm among a circle of like-minded Danes and Norwegians. She begins to refine a style that looks toward France, even as she remains anchored by her own experiences.

The Impressionist Light

In Munich, the influence of Ludwig von Herterich takes hold. He introduces her to the techniques of Impressionism, a movement that will define her brushwork. She moves through the women's art schools of both Berlin and Munich, places where she is permitted to study anatomy and draw from live models—opportunities denied to women in the official academies. Her work begins to reflect this freedom, characterized by confident color choices and a focus on light.

Her professional life reaches a peak of activity through various affiliations:

  • Berlin Secession: A period of active engagement with the evolving German art scene.
  • Free Secession: Following the split in the movement, she continues her practice under new leadership.
  • Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts: Her presence is felt even in the prestigious French salons.

The paintings from this era capture specific, quiet moments. A self-portrait from 1887 reveals a young woman with tangled curls and a steady gaze. Later works, such as Houses on Montmartre, reflect her time in Paris, while other pieces focus on the delicate textures of flora.

Loss and the Final Still Lifes

The trajectory of her career meets a harsh interruption. The rise of the National Socialist regime brings a dark era; her work is branded as "Entartete Kunst" (Degenerate Art) in 1933. This designation, combined with the devastation of World War II, leads to the destruction or loss of many of her paintings. The visibility of her talent begins to fade from the public eye.

In her later years, health struggles force a retreat. She moves to the countryside near Münsing, far from the bustling galleries of Berlin. Her focus narrows. The expansive landscapes and portraits give way to the intimate, repetitive study of flowers. These late still lifes are painted in a period of isolation, marking the end of a life that began with the bold pursuit of a new name.
