Early Life, Family and Training
Born in Bremen, Germany, on April 9, 1817, Wilhelm Steinhäuser entered a family deeply rooted in the tactile traditions of craftsmanship. His father, Georg Andreas Steinhäuser, was a sculptor and woodcarver who operated a business specializing in mirror frames. This domestic environment, shaped by the hands of his parents, Georg and Henriette Friederike Steinhäuser, provided a foundation of technical discipline. Wilhelm was not alone in this lineage; his brothers, Adolph and Carl Steinhäuser, also pursued the path of the sculptor, receiving their early instruction within the family workshop.
The trajectory of Wilhelm Steinhäuser shifted from the sculptural traditions of his father toward the nuanced demands of portraiture. During the 1830s, he sought formal instruction in Munich, studying under Joseph Bernhardt. This period of training refined his ability to capture the likeness of his subjects, a skill that would define much of his professional output. While his focus moved toward the canvas, he remained a versatile practitioner, maintaining an active presence as a lithographer and a sculptor throughout his career.
Travels and Periods of Activity
The trajectory of Steinhäuser’s career was shaped by a significant departure from his German roots in his youth. In 1835, he accompanied his brother Carl on a long stay in Rome. This period in Italy allowed him to refine his focus, moving toward the creation of portraits and historical subjects. By 1841, he had returned to Bremen, establishing a presence in his home city through regular exhibitions.
His professional reach expanded through the mid-19th century as he sought broader audiences. In 1843, he exhibited his work in both Munich and Rome, demonstrating an ability to navigate the major artistic centers of Europe. This period of movement continued as he moved further west; by 1848, he was active in Belgium and Paris, contributing to the diverse landscape of European painting during those years.
Key Works and Subjects
Steinhäuser’s artistic output was defined by a profound commitment to portraiture, capturing the likenesses of both his intimate circle and notable public figures. His family remained a central subject throughout his career, as seen in the oil portraits of his parents, Georg Andreas Steinhäuser and Henriette Friederike Steinhäuser, painted about 1842 and about 1841–43 respectively. He also turned his brush toward his siblings, producing a portrait of Franz Wilhelm Steinhäuser around 1840/45. Later in his life, his focus remained on his kin, evidenced by the portrait of Henriette Wilhelmine Steinhäuser from about 1870.
Beyond the domestic sphere, his work documented the faces of his contemporaries and acquaintances. In 1845, he painted the portrait of the writer Adolf Stahr, a man he had met during his time in Rome. His ability to capture character extended to other prominent figures, such as the portrait of Georg Conrad Pacius around 1849/52 and the likeness of Apollonia Pacius about 1850. These works, along with the portrait of Ulrike Magdalena Zieseniß from the 1850s, demonstrate a steady hand in recording the individuals of his era.
