A Life Shaped by Earth and Water
Born in Newington Green, Middlesex, England, to a family of Dutch origin, the early years of Samuel Marsden Brookes were rooted in the verdant world of botany. His father managed a large nursery for exotic plants in London, a setting that likely planted the seeds of an observant eye. In 1833, the family moved across the Atlantic to settle near Chicago, seeking new opportunities for his father’s trade. As a teenager in this new American landscape, the young man found himself drawn away from the nursery and toward the sketches of traveling portrait artists. Though his father harbored little desire for him to pursue art as a profession, the boy continued to develop his skill by copying miniatures and local works.
The path of his development was marked by movement between continents and cities. By his mid-twenties, he had earned enough through his fledgling painting practice to return to Europe with his wife, Julia Jones. During a year spent in London, he immersed himself in the great galleries, studying the Old Masters with a self-taught intensity that bypassed formal academic instruction. This period of intense observation refined his ability to capture detail, a skill he would later bring back to the United States, working through Chicago and Milwaukee before eventually finding a permanent home in San Francisco.
The Mastery of the Still Life
While his early career involved painting portraits—including notable works of Indian chiefs—it was in the quiet, meticulous study of nature that he found his true calling. Upon settling in California, his focus shifted toward the still life, specifically the bounty of the sea and the forest. He possessed a singular ability to suggest the physical presence of his subjects: the sleek, slippery wetness of a freshly caught salmon or the heavy, limp weight of a dead game bird. His compositions often featured fish such as trout, steelhead, and the now rare Dolly Varden, frequently arranged in cascading clusters against solid walls.
His technique was characterized by a certain restraint and a peculiar use of space. He often placed his objects against flat backgrounds, a choice that some critics found limiting because it prevented the eye from receding into deep distance, yet this very method pushed his subjects forward toward the viewer. His palette for these aquatic subjects often utilized muted, metallic colorations that captured the light reflecting off scales. This dedication to the tangible reality of his subjects made him a specialist in the textures of life and death, whether depicting fruit, birds, or the silver sheen of a ling cod.
A Legacy in the Golden West
Beyond the canvas, Brookes was deeply woven into the social and artistic fabric of San Francisco during its era of growth. He was a man of significant communal influence, helping to organize the California Art Union in 1865 and serving as a founding member of the San Francisco Art Association. His presence was felt in the local creative circles, including the Bohemian Club, where he was a founder alongside journalists and other notable figures. He shared studios with other painters like Edward Deakin and mentored students such as William Keith, ensuring that his influence reached the next generation of California artists.
Though much of his work faced the tragedy of the 1906 earthquake and fire at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art, his reputation remained anchored by the pieces held in prestigious collections. His life concluded in San Francisco in 1892, leaving behind a body of work that remains a vital record of the natural world of the nineteenth-century American West. His paintings continue to reside in institutions such as the Crocker Art Museum and the Brooklyn Museum, where they serve as windows into a vanished era of maritime and woodland abundance.
