The art of Safet Zec invites us into a realm where the boundaries between the internal soul and the external world begin to dissolve. Born in the town of Rogatica, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Zec emerged as a profound voice in contemporary art, particularly recognized as a central figure of poetic realism. His journey began with formal training at the School of Applied Arts in Sarajevo, followed by rigorous academic pursuits at the University of Fine Arts in Belgrade, where he completed his postgraduate studies. This foundation allowed him to develop a meticulous technique that balances the structured geometry of domestic life with the untamed, organic vitality of nature.
His work often functions as a sanctuary of light and stillness. In masterpieces such as My Sister, one finds a meditation on the relationship between sheltered human spaces and the lush landscapes visible through open windows. This period of profound upheaval forced him to flee his homeland, leading him first to Udine, Italy. This displacement marked a significant chapter in his creative evolution; while much of his earlier work remained in his Sarajevo studio, his time in Italy provided a new landscape for his artistic exploration. Since 1 998, he has found a second home in Venice, maintaining a creative presence that spans between Sarajevo, Počitelj, Venice, and Paris.
Despite the shadows of conflict, Zec’s philosophy remains rooted in a desire for moral renewal. He has often expressed that his art seeks to contribute to breaking the veil of indifference through the power of observation. His prolific output includes not only paintings but also an extensive body of graphic work, with his engraved plates numbering more than 250. This versatility as both a painter and an engraver has allowed him to communicate complex themes of companionship, memory, and the concept of home as an emotional state rather than just a physical location.

His contributions to the visual arts have been honored with more than 20 awards, including the prestigious Order of the Arts and Literature of France in 2007.
