1682 - 1766

A life of lines and light

Robert Gardelle moved through the centers of European art with a steady, practiced hand. Born in Geneva in 1682 to a family of goldsmiths and painters, his early years were shaped by the precise work of metal and pigment. He traveled to Germany around 1702, finding a place in Kassel under the patronage of Baron Gustav von Mardefeld. In Berlin, he worked alongside his brother Daniel, copying portraits of royalty like Charles XII of Sweden. These early years in German courts provided a foundation of discipline and observation.

The path eventually led him to Paris. Around 1714, he entered the studio of Nicolas de Largillière. Here, the influence of the French master became visible in his approach to the human face. He learned to capture the weight of a wig and the texture of a lace cravat. This period in Paris was not merely about learning technique; it was about absorbing a specific way of seeing people through their status and presence.

By 1715, he had returned to Geneva, but his reach extended far beyond the city walls. He worked in Vaud, Neuchâtel, and Bern, leaving behind a trail of faces on canvas and copper. His work was often characterized by its speed. There are accounts of him completing life-size oil portraits in as little as two or three days. This efficiency allowed him to accept many commissions, filling the homes of local magistrates and nobles with their own likenesses.

The marks of a craftsman

Gardelle’s output was varied, spanning portraiture, landscapes, and printmaking. While he is often remembered for his portraits, his etchings and engravings show a different kind of focus. He produced views of Geneva, capturing the architecture and the layout of the city through fine, etched lines. These works offer a window into the geography of his home, much like his paintings capture the people who lived there.

  • Portraiture of notable figures, such as J.-L. Buisson in armour.
  • Landscape views, including panoramic perspectives of Geneva.
  • Etchings and engravings that documented urban scenery.
  • Small-scale works on copper and enamel.
  • His technique relied on a clear understanding of light and form. In his portraits, the clothing—whether a blue coat with gold borders or an embroidered house coat—is rendered with enough detail to suggest the physical reality of the fabric. He did not shy away from the smaller formats either, working on wood, cardboard, and even copper. These smaller pieces, like his miniatures, required a different kind of patience and a steady eye for minute details.

The end of his life came in 1766 in Geneva, following a fall. He left behind a body of work that remains held in collections such as the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire in Geneva and various libraries. His legacy is found in the sheer volume of faces he preserved, captured with a swiftness that allowed him to document an entire era of Genevan and European life.
