His father, Gustaf Napoleon Morsing, held the position of Major and District Manager of the Royal Roads and Water Building Corps, while his mother was Ebba Wilhelmina Dahlberg. His formal training began within traditional academic settings. He studied at Caleb Althin's painting school, completing a portrait study there in 1906. Later, he continued his education at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts. These institutions provided him with a foundation rooted in established methods before he encountered the shifting ideas of the modern era.
Evolution of style and subject
The work of Morsing moved through distinct phases over several decades. In the 1920s, his landscapes were characterized by a gentle haze of minor tonal shifts. These pieces occasionally used references to pointillism and shared a certain quality with the nocturnals of Whistler. His still lifes remained more naturalistic in their approach.
As time passed, his compositions changed significantly. By the 1950s, his work became pared back, reaching a state that was almost minimalist. In these later years, he might depict two desolate trees against a view of blocky greens and browns, or silhouetted figures looking toward a distant sea. His career allowed him to bridge the gap between the rigors of academic training and the emerging modernist influences filtering into Stockholm.
