The Life and Art of Lance Solomon
Lance Solomon was an Australian painter, widely noted for his landscapes. Born in Liverpool, New South Wales, he grew up in a house built by his grandfather on the outskirts of Sydney before moving to Manly in 1920. His early interest in drawing led him to leave school at age 15, earning a living with pencils and watercolors. After being introduced to oils by Robert Johnson, he studied at the East Sydney Technical College and later received a New South Wales Travelling Art Scholarship in 1939, which allowed him to study at the Royal Academy School in London.
His career was marked by significant recognition, including winning the prestigious Wynne Prize on two occasions: first in 1946 for January Weather and again in 1953 for The River Bend. His works, such as Country Lane and Blue Lagoon, were acquired by major institutions and presented to notable figures, including the Queen Mother. Throughout his life, Solomon sought new subjects for his paintings, traveling to areas like Mudgee with fellow artist Henry Aloysius Hanke.

Solomon's artistic output earned him various accolades and placements in esteemed collections. His work is held by the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra and several state galleries. Notable achievements include:

- Winning Rural Bank prizes for Bush Dweller in 1961 and Mellow Day in 1965.
