A Life in Color and Identity

Born in Brooklyn, New York, to parents from Puerto Rico, Juan Sánchez has emerged as a significant Nuyorican cultural figure. His artistic practice is deeply rooted in the exploration of ethnic, racial, and national identity, often addressing the complexities of Puerto Rican life both on the island and within the United States. Through his work, Sánchez confronts political policies and social practices, specifically focusing on the obstacles faced by disadvantaged Puerto Ricans and the struggle for independence. His creative output is diverse, spanning photography, paintings, and mixed media works.

Sánchez’s technical approach is characterized by the combination of painting and photography with found objects and media clippings. These brightly hued mixed media canvases serve as a visual language to navigate the social landscapes of his heritage. His academic background includes a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Cooper Union in New York and a Master of Fine Arts from Rutgers University's Mason Gross School of the Arts.

His pieces are held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. In addition to his studio practice, Sánchez serves as a professor of painting, photography, and combined media at Hunter College in New York City.
