A Life Shaped by the American Landscape

Jack McMillen began his life in Jericho, Texas, in 1910. His early years took him through the heart of the country, from the streets of Cincinnati, Ohio, to the plains of Douglas, Nebraska. These shifting surroundings likely informed his connection to the American Scene, a style that sought to capture the essence of local life and history. He sought formal training at the Art Students League in New York and the Minneapolis School of Art, eventually earning a bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of Missouri.

His hands were skilled in many disciplines. He did not limit himself to a single medium, instead working through graphic design, printmaking, lithography, etching, and woodblocks. This versatility allowed him to move between the delicate precision of a print and the grand scale of a public mural.

Public Works and Personal Trials

During the Great Depression, McMillen found himself tasked with bringing art to the public through significant mural commissions. These works were not merely decorations but historical records of the communities they inhabited. His work for the Post Office in College Park, Georgia, in 1938 depicted the arrival of the first train, while his 1939 mural in Tuscumbia, Alabama, focused on the arrival of the first white families in that region.

His career was marked by both service and sudden hardship. After marrying Beatrice Alperstein in 1940, he was drafted into the Army in 1942. His artistic talent was utilized to manage a traveling art show intended to raise money for war bonds. However, his service was cut short by a diagnosis of an esophageal tumor in 1943. Following a successful operation at Walter Reed Hospital, he felt a deep sense of gratitude toward the medical staff. This led to a special commission for a mural at the Forest Glen rehabilitation center, a work that remains on view today at the National Museum of Health and Medicine in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Throughout his professional development, McMillen achieved several milestones:

  • Created murals for the First Presbyterian Church in Kirksville, Missouri.
  • Received recognition through various prizes in 1949, 1953, and 1954.
  • Worked extensively as a commercial illustrator following the war.

The Later Years

After the war, McMillen settled into a successful career as a commercial illustrator. His ability to translate complex ideas into visual forms earned him consistent professional respect. His personal life saw significant change later in his years; after the passing of his brother and his wife, he married his brother's widow, Pauline Dawn Galloway McMillen. He lived until 1990, leaving behind a body of work that captured the specific, often complicated, history of the American landscape.
