The Quiet Lines of a Life in Motion

Irene Bianucci began her life in Lucca, Tuscany, before her family moved to the United States when she was six. The early years were spent in Farmer City and Clinton, Illinois, where the landscape likely left its mark on her eye. She moved through the halls of Clinton High School and Millikin University before finding her way to the Chicago Art Institute in 1926. Her hands were busy with more than just sketches; she was a painter, a muralist, an illustrator, and a designer. She worked through the decades, active from 1931 until 1980, finding her place within the art projects of the New Deal.

Her work often found its home on the walls of public spaces. She took on commissions for murals in Chicago, working on the walls of Clara Barton Elementary School and Martin A. Ryerson Elementary School. In the latter, she painted scenes like "Discovery of America" and "Landing of Columbus" around 1940. These were not small tasks. They required a sense of scale and a way to speak to the people passing through those school hallways.

A Record of Work and Recognition

The years she spent developing her craft were marked by specific achievements and a steady presence in the local art scene. Her development can be seen through the following milestones:

  • Winning three blue ribbons and five red ribbons at the state fair in 1927.
  • Receiving the Union League Club of Chicago Art Prize in 1930 for "Little Russian Girl".
  • Winning the George Raab at the Decatur Art Institute.
  • Creating the oil on canvas mural "Rural Scene–Wakarusa Valley" for the Mount Carroll, Illinois post office in 1941.

The Weight of the Canvas

There is a specific gravity to her 1941 work, "Rural Scene–Wakarusa Valley," which is held by the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. It is an oil on canvas, a medium that allows for a certain density of color and texture. While some of her murals, such as those at Clara Barton School, were lost to time, her presence remains in the collections of those who preserved her vision. She lived a long life, passing away in 1988, leaving behind a body of work that moved from the private study of a student to the public walls of schools and post offices.
