The Architect of Form
The transition from the rigid lines of architecture to the fluid possibilities of sculpture begins in 1943. Born in Noordwijkerhout, Gust Romijn initially trained to design structures, a discipline that would later inform his understanding of space and mass. He did not merely draw; he began to sculpt and paint, moving through the post-war landscape of the Netherlands with a focus on how objects occupy a room or a street. By the 1950s, his presence in the Rotterdam art scene was defined by a desire to reshape the visual language of the era.
His work during this period was marked by a tension between the organic and the constructed. He became a central figure in the Venstergroep, a collective of young Rotterdam graphic artists that included Louis van Roode and Piet Rovers. This era was one of rapid experimentation, where the boundaries between graphic design, painting, and three-dimensional form began to dissolve. His involvement with the Liga Nieuw Beelden and his contribution to the E55 exhibition signaled a shift toward a new, modern sensibility in Dutch art.
Recognition and Expansion
The mid-century period brought specific accolades that validated his technical precision and creative vision. His output during these years was diverse, spanning from the graphic arts to large-scale public works. His career was characterized by several key milestones:
- The receipt of the Nationale 5 mei Grafiekprijs in 1955.
- Winning the Prix Suisse in 1957.
- Participation in the World Exhibition in Brussels in 1958.
- A brief residency in New York during the 1960s.
In Rotterdam, his work became part of the city's physical fabric. He moved from the studio to the streets, creating works that interacted with the urban environment. His sculptures often addressed the concept of growth and the changing face of the city, treating the built environment as a living, breathing entity rather than a static collection of walls.
The Living Plastic
In 1965, the creation of Het Oneindige Huis in Rotterdam introduced a different dimension to his practice. He described such works as "leefplastiek"—a living plastic—where imagination and function met. These sculptures were not distant objects to be viewed from afar; they were composed of organic forms that invited interaction, often becoming play elements for children. He explored the interplay between open spaces and closed masses, creating a dreamlike architecture that felt both alien and essential to the urban landscape.
After decades of working in the bustling atmosphere of Rotterdam, he moved to Dreischor in 1982. His later years were spent far from the architectural training of his youth, yet the fundamental questions of space and form remained. He continued to influence the next generation through teaching positions at the Rotterdamse Academie and the Vrije Academie in Den Haag. When he died in 2010, he left behind a body of work that bridged the gap between the structured world of the architect and the spontaneous world of the sculptor.
