Early Life, Family and Training

Fritz Gartz entered the world on February 3, 1883, in Berlin, Germany. He was born into a large, industrious family, arriving as the seventh of twelve children to a baker. This domestic setting provided the foundational backdrop to a life that would eventually move from the practicalities of a bakery to the disciplined study of fine art.

His formal engagement with painting began in September 1905, when he enrolled in a private painting school in Berlin. This initial period of study provided the technical groundwork necessary for his subsequent move to Munich. By October 1906, Gartz had relocated to the Bavarian capital to continue his development as a painter, entering the school of Walter Thor. His formal education reached its peak at the Art Academy, where he studied under the guidance of Hugo von Habermann.

During these formative years in Munich, Gartz moved within circles that would shape the trajectory of modern art. It was in this environment that he encountered Jorgos Busianis and Giorgio de Chirico, the latter of whom he would later capture in an early portrait in 1908. These connections, established during his student years, placed him at the center of a shifting aesthetic landscape as he transitioned from a student of tradition to a practitioner of his own distinct vision.

Artistic Style and Professional Life

Gartz’s aesthetic evolution was marked by a transition from the soft influences of Impressionism toward a more potent, expressive form. This shift eventually aligned him with the movement known as Expressive Realism. His early talent for portraiture was evident as early as 1908, when he captured the likeness of Giorgio de Chirico. As his technique matured, his focus expanded to include landscape painting, often finding inspiration in the Bavarian mountains and the shores of the Chiemsee.

His professional standing in the Munich art scene was solidified through various institutional affiliations. Between 1911 and 1913, he was a member of the German Artists Association "Die Juryfreien," followed by his membership in the Free Munich Artists in 1914. During the National Socialist period, he was an obligatory member of the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts. His technical skill and contribution to the regional art community were recognized in 1932 when he was awarded the Albrecht-Dürer-Preis by the city of Nuremberg.

Travels and Later Years

In 1907, Gartz traveled to Egypt, an excursion that preceded the profound disruptions of the Great War. His time in the military began in 1915, and he returned to civilian life in 1917 following a wound sustained during his service. These years of upheaval eventually gave way to a more settled existence. In 1928, he entered into his second marriage and established a home in Söcking, near Starnberg, where he built a house to anchor his life.

The later decades of his life were marked by a quiet withdrawal. From 1934 onward, he retreated from the public eye to focus on his family life, sustaining himself through various commissioned works. This period of seclusion was punctuated by a significant retrospective in 1954, when the Städtische Galerie München hosted his first solo exhibition. He remained in Söcking until his death in 1960, leaving behind a legacy reflected in the local geography through the Fritz-Gartz-Weg in Starnberg.
