The Life and Art of Benjamin Prins
Benjamin Liepman Prins was a Dutch genre artist born in Arnhem, the Netherlands. He began his formal art education at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, studying under Professor August Allebé for five years starting around 1877. His academic journey continued in Belgium, where he studied at the Royal Academy, Antwerp, with Professor Charles Verlat for two years. Prins also spent time in Paris between 1884 and 1886, studying under Fernand Cormon.
His artistic career included exhibiting works such as Het Oude en Nieuwe Testament (The Old and the New Testament) at the Tri-Annual Show in Amsterdam. His paintings were shown across Europe in cities including London, Milan, Antwerp, Vilna, and Rotterdam. In 1904, his work Oude Zeeman (Old Sailor) was purchased by the Queen. Returning to Amsterdam in 1888, he established himself as a professional artist specializing in still lifes and portraits of farmers and members of the local Jewish community.
Artistic Style and Personal History
Prins' genre paintings are characterized by a sense of quiet happiness, humor, and serenity. His works often depict the bourgeoisie, featuring subjects such as his painting Twijfel (Doubt), which portrays a young woman with a mischievous glint in her eyes looking at a piggy bank. He also traveled to North Brabant to paint landscapes and rural farms.
Beyond his studio work, Prins was active in the art community, serving as a long-time president of the artists' club Arti et Amicitiae and as a presiding member of the St. Lucas Society. He was married to Rosa Benari and had two daughters, Gretha and Molly.
