The Life and Training of August Fink
August Fink begins his life in Munich, Germany, born on April 30, 1846. His early years do not follow the path of a painter. Instead, he undergoes training as a merchant. This commercial focus leads him far from Bavaria; in 1859, he travels to the United States. He spends seven years working in the American merchant trade, navigating a life of commerce until 1866.
The shift toward art happens in private. Returning to his roots, August Fink begins to study painting under the guidance of Adolf Stademann and Eduard Schleich the Elder. These early lessons form the foundation of his technical skill. By 1872, his training becomes more structured as he enters the studio of Adolf Lier. He continues to refine his craft under Josef Wenglein, moving steadily away from the world of trade and toward the discipline of the brush.
Professional Career and Academic Recognition
The year 1874 marks a shift toward public visibility. From this point, his work enters the exhibition circuits of Munich, Berlin, and Nuremberg. By 1878, he has established himself as a freelance artist in Munich, working independently within the city's competitive art scene.
Institutional recognition follows. In 1889, he is appointed as a professor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. This academic standing is reinforced by his status as an honorary member of the Munich Academy. His presence in the Munich art establishment is solidified through official accolades, including a gold medal awarded at the 1905 annual exhibition held in the Munich Glaspalast.
