A Life of Lines and Color

Albert Mertz arrived on the Danish art scene with a precocious energy, exhibiting at the Artists Autumn Exhibition in 1936 when he was only sixteen. Born in Copenhagen in 1920, his early years were marked by a restless curiosity that led him to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He did not stay long; by 1938, he had walked away from the Academy in protest against its rigid teaching methods. This early defiance set the tone for a career defined by experimentation and a refusal to be bound by tradition.

His initial explorations moved through Pointillism and Surrealism before he turned his attention toward the moving image. In 1942, he co-directed Flugten (The Escape), Denmark's first experimental film. This period of filmmaking was not a detour but an expansion of his visual language, influencing his later work with collage and photomontage. He sought to strip away the subjective emotions of the artist, favoring the material itself over the inner life of the creator.

The Geometry of Difference

By the late 1940s, Mertz became a central figure in the Linien II artists association. His work during this era embraced a simplified Constructivist style, utilizing a limited palette of strong colors to explore geometric abstraction. He moved away from figurative subjects toward a more concrete form of art, where the arrangement of shapes and the weight of color held primary importance.

A defining moment in his development occurred between 1968 and 1971 with the formulation of his red+blue proposition. This signature motif—often appearing as a rectangle containing a red square alongside a blue one—was an exercise in pure difference. He viewed these colors not as symbols for anything else, but simply as themselves. As he noted in his writings, the blue remains blue regardless of its proximity to red or white; it is a study in how elements exist together without forced harmony.

Exile and Final Notes

The middle years of Mertz's life were spent largely in France, living in Menton and later Paris from 1962 to 1976. This period of working exile allowed him to engage with international movements like Fluxus and Neo-Dada, often associating with artists such as Arthur Köpcke. His practice grew increasingly multidisciplinary, encompassing sculpture, assemblage, and even the creation of intricate notebooks and diaries that documented his philosophical inquiries into art theory.

In his later years, Mertz returned to Denmark, settling on Glænø. Even as he moved toward installations and more complex assemblages, the fundamental principles of his early Constructivist work remained present. He left behind a body of work held in significant collections, including the Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg and the ZKM | Zentrum für Kunst und Medien. His death in 1990 marked the end of a career that consistently prioritized the raw, unprimed reality of the medium over the polished expectations of the gallery.
