Early Life, Family and Training

Albert Bredow was born into a family where the theater was a central reality. He was the son of the theater director Eduard Bredow and Laura Eleonore, née Nowack. This lineage suggests an early immersion in the mechanics of stagecraft and visual storytelling. While his specific early training remains a matter of historical silence, his later professional versatility as a landscape painter, lithographer, and stage designer points to a disciplined, multifaceted technical foundation.

His formal academic engagement arrived later than one might expect for a man of his professional standing. In 1868, Bredow began his studies at the Petersburg Imperial Art Academy. This period of study provided the structural rigor necessary to transition from the practical demands of scenography to the more nuanced requirements of landscape painting. His ability to navigate both the grand scale of the stage and the intimate details of a lithograph stems from this intersection of practical theater work and academic study.

Career in Russia and Theater Work

Bredow’s professional trajectory shifted decisively toward the Russian Empire in the mid-19th century. After establishing himself in Riga in 1852, he moved to Tallinn to work as a stage designer. His technical competence caught the attention of the Imperial Theater management, leading to an invitation to Moscow in 1856. This move transitioned him from regional work to the center of the imperial theatrical establishment.

His tenure in the major theatrical hubs was defined by steady, high-level employment. From 1856 to 1862, he served as a stage designer for the Moscow Theater, followed by a period in the Petersburg Theater that lasted until 1871. His contributions to the stage were significant enough to earn him the title of Court Theater Painter. This was not merely a decorative role; his ability to construct visual environments was central to the era's theatrical production.

The scale of his work is best understood through his published designs. In 1863, a Petersburg publication released an album featuring his stage designs for Glinka’s opera A Life for the Tsar. These illustrations provide a concrete record of the visual worlds he constructed for the stage. His ability to translate dramatic narrative into physical space remains the most tangible aspect of his Russian career.

Later Years and Death

After 1871, Bredow shifted his focus toward the theatrical landscapes of Vienna. He served as a theater painter at the Theater in der Josefstadt, applying his technical skill to the stage. His influence extended beyond the traditional playhouse when he designed the auditorium for the Circus Carré in the Wiener Prater. These projects demonstrate a professional versatility that bridged the gap between fine art and functional scenography.

The 1880s saw a return to Germany, with Bredow settling in Berlin. His personal life during this period included his marriage to Margarete, née Grossmann, in 1886. This era marked a final chapter of stability before his death. He died on April 23, 1899, in Charlottenburg, though some records place his passing on May 5, 1899, in Moscow.
