Rydal Water Hand-painted in oil, just for your walls

A Legacy of English Landscapes

The story of William Lakin Turner is one deeply rooted in the verdant traditions of the English countryside. Born in Barrow upon Trent, Derbyshire, he was the son of the esteemed painter George Turner, a man often referred to as "the Derbyshire Constable." Growing up within a household where art and nature were inextricably linked, William inherited a profound sensitivity to the landscape. His early artistic development was shaped by the guidance of his father and further refined through studies with Louis Bosworth Hurt, creating a foundation built upon the observation of light, texture, and the quiet majesty of the natural world.

His work serves as a delicate window into the British wilderness, capturing the atmospheric essence of regions such as the Lake District and the rugged terrains of Scotland. Turner possessed a particular mastery over mountain landscapes and woodland scenes, often imbuing his oil paintings with a sense of serene solitude. Whether depicting the tranquil waters of Rydal Water or the rustic charm of a cottage by the wayside, his brushwork sought to evoke the timeless beauty of the rural landscape before the encroaching shadows of modern mechanization.

Artistic Mastery and Exhibition

Turner’s career was marked by a dedicated presence in the most prestigious artistic circles of his era. He was a frequent contributor to the Royal Academy of Artists, where he exhibited numerous works that showcased his ability to render wild, mountainous scenery with remarkable precision and emotion. His reach extended beyond London, as he presented his visions to audiences in Birmingham and at the annual exhibitions at Nottingham Castle. The sheer volume of his output is evidenced by his prolific participation in the Lake Artists Summer Exhibition, where he displayed hundreds of paintings between 1905 and 1936.

The enduring significance of his contribution to British landscape painting is preserved within several notable collections. His canvases continue to be admired in institutions such as:

• The Derby Museum and Art Gallery
• The Nuneaton Museum and Art Gallery
• The Ruskin Museum
• Nottingham Museums

Beyond the galleries, his legacy touched the lives of notable figures; for instance, his painting Rydal Water was acquired by Beatrix Potter and remains a part of the cherished collection at Hill Top. Through these works, Turner did more than merely record scenery; he captured the very soul of the English landscape, ensuring that the quiet beauty of the mountains and woods would remain vibrant for generations to come.
