Stephen Posen (born 1939) stands as a significant figure in American painting, particularly recognized for his groundbreaking contribution to photorealism during the vibrant Soho art scene of the 1960s and 70s. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, he embarked on an artistic journey marked by formal training at Washington University (BFA, 1962) followed by postgraduate studies at Yale University (MFA, 1964), where he was nurtured alongside luminaries like Brice Marden, Richard Serra, Nancy Graves, and Chuck Close – a cohort that profoundly shaped the trajectory of contemporary art. His formative years included a transformative Fulbright fellowship in Italy (1966), immersing him in European artistic traditions and broadening his creative horizons. Returning to New York City, Posen swiftly established himself within Soho’s burgeoning artistic community, becoming synonymous with meticulous detail and textural exploration.
