The sharply realistic drawings, paintings and conceptual works of Paphonsak La-or (Thailand b.1981) critique Thai politics and history. His ‘Silent No More’ series features empty landscapes around Fukushima and Futaba in Japan — areas abandoned following the 2011 nuclear disasters. Viewing the terrain obsessively through Google Maps, La-or discovered a connection between his fascination with these quiet, uninhabitable landscapes and his frustration with the political situation in Thailand. Finding similarities between the beautiful, lush landscapes of Japan and those around his hometown of Chiang Mai, La-or emphasises the contradictions between the apparently peaceful scenes and the turbulent situations they represent. Each painting in the series bears text painted with dust, conveying a sense of unease and distrust, and further undermining the idyllic tranquility portrayed.Exhibited in

Paphonsak La-or: A Voice of Critique Through Realistic Detail
Thai artist Paphonsak La-or emerged from Chiang Mai in 1981, driven by a profound engagement with Thai history and politics. His artistic vision isn’t merely about depicting landscapes; it's about wielding realism as a tool for social commentary—a deliberate choice that distinguishes him within the contemporary Thai art scene. He seeks to provoke reflection on societal narratives and challenge accepted interpretations of events past.- Early Influences: La-or’s artistic journey began with an interest in traditional Thai painting techniques, particularly batik and watercolor. These influences instilled a meticulous attention to detail and a sensitivity to color palettes rooted in Thai cultural heritage.
- Formal Training: He pursued formal training at Chiang Mai University, honing his skills in drawing and painting before embarking on independent artistic exploration.
- Notable Series: His most celebrated work includes ‘Silent No More,’ a series exploring the aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear disaster. These drawings depict empty Japanese landscapes, mirroring the profound silence left in wake of tragedy. The starkness of the imagery underscores La-or’s commitment to confronting uncomfortable truths.
- Biennale Recognition: His inclusion in the Singapore Biennial cemented his reputation as a significant voice within Southeast Asian contemporary art.
- Recent Exhibitions: Recent exhibitions have showcased La-or’s ability to convey complex emotions through subtle visual cues, solidifying his position as one of Thailand's foremost artists.
