charles keith miller, a british marine artist, was born in 1836 in the port city of dundee. his life's trajectory is marked by an early foray into the maritime world, as he first went to sea at the age of 15 aboard the steamer correo. this inaugural journey set the stage for his future artistic inclinations.maritime service and artistic pursuits
miller spent a decade at sea before being awarded his master's certificate in 1861. his subsequent years were divided between captaining barques to the far east and shorter passages in steamships. a pivotal moment in his life came when he attempted to become a ship portrait painter to supplement his income, with his first known painting dating back to 1872.artistic career
miller temporarily relinquished his captain's service for six years to focus on maritime art. after briefly returning to sea as master of the steamship sandringham for two voyages, he finally retired in 1888 to concentrate on his marine art. notably, his only exhibited work at the royal scottish academy was "after the squall", dated from the same year.notable works and legacy
