A Life in the Dutch Republic and England
Pieter Hermansz Verelst was a Dutch Golden Age painter born in Dordrecht. His life was marked by significant movement across the Low Countries; he began his career in Dordrecht, where he became a member of the city's Guild of Saint Luke in 1638. He later worked in Rotterdam and moved to The Hague, where he joined The Hague Guild of Saint Luke and co-founded the Confrerie Pictura, serving as a deacon. Following a slump in the art market, Verelst moved with some of his children to London, where he died in England.
Verelst was a father to several painters, including his sons Herman, Simon, John, and William. His workshop in The Hague was a place of active instruction, where he trained his sons and other pupils.
