The Quiet Presence of Mark Scherer
Born in 1943, Mark Scherer has spent decades working within the realm of American painting. His presence in the art world is marked by a steady, focused application of color and form. He does not seek to overwhelm the viewer with grand gestures, but rather invites a closer look at the subtle shifts in a composition. His work suggests a life spent observing the way light settles on a surface and how shapes interact within a frame.
The practice of painting requires a certain patience, a willingness to sit with a canvas until the intention becomes clear. Scherer’s approach reflects this stillness. There is a sense of deliberation in his hand, a way of placing one mark after another to build a visual language that is entirely his own. He works from a place of quiet observation, letting the paint dictate the pace of the piece.
A Notable Work
In the early years of the 1970s, Scherer produced work that found its way into significant collections. His output during this period shows a commitment to the formal qualities of the medium. One specific piece from 1971, titled That's That, remains a key point of reference for his career. This work is held within the Cleveland Museum of Art, a testament to the lasting interest in his visual contributions.
The details of his practice include:
- The use of oil on canvas to achieve specific textures.
- A focus on the relationship between subject and space.
- A career spanning from the mid-twentieth century into the present.
The Weight of the Canvas
To look at a Scherer painting is to see the result of a specific, physical process. He does not rely on artifice to create meaning. Instead, the meaning is found in the weight of the brushstroke and the way colors sit next to one another. His work avoids the loud or the performative, opting instead for a directness that rewards the patient eye. He remains an active part of the American painting tradition, continuing his work with a steady hand.
